President's Monthly Message
Why would people without school-aged children want to become members of a synagogue? There are SO MANY REASONS !!! Many of which are similar to the reasons we become members when our children are young. Yes, educating Jewish Youth is a primary objective, but what about before we have families and then once they are grown and on their own?
You hear it time and time again, “We belonged when our kids were in Hebrew School, but after the last Bar-Mitzvah, we didn’t see the point...”
There is a keyword here that gets overlooked in that statement, and that is “belonged.”
When you are a Synagogue Member, you BELONG to an extended family of people who share a common Heritage, Traditions, and happy Holiday memories. There are unspoken bonds of comfort that you don’t find in your other relationships. An inner warmth that surges through you during services, a feeling of peace and comfort from sitting in the sanctuary that goes beyond the utterance of an old familiar language and melodies that you know were sung by your Bubbies and Zaydas…. and theirs…. and theirs !!!
No matter what your position in life, there is a friendship like no other, a sense of common understanding that transcends age, economic group, career path or the neighborhood you live in! Whether you are a police officer, physician, lawyer, teacher, salesperson, homemaker, retiree, pharmacist, judge, waitress or musician, being a member of a congregation gives you friends to laugh and celebrate births and life accomplishments with, and an extended family who truly care, to cry and mourn alongside you in times of loss and bereavement. We are all created equally Jewish, and the rest of the politics of the general community don’t apply within the synagogue walls!
With youth groups for students, shows to attend and games of mahjongg or pinnacle for seniors, singles groups, parenting groups, bereavement or illness-specific support groups, Dinners, Dances, Bagel Brunches, Board Meetings, Committees to join and participate in, a synagogue provides its own little microcosm of life that grows and nurtures from within and blossoms forth into the community with Tzedakah and people who make this world a better place in which to live!
Enrich your life!!! Bring your friends to our Synagogue! Enrich all of our lives!!!
Let’s Re-build our Family Membership together!!!
